How will you select the right school for your children?

Some choose a school based on proximity to their residence, others select a school where their children’s friends attend, and still others decide based on tradition.

While these all seem to be legitimate reasons, they overlook the fundamental element for selection of a school — the student success rate. In other words, how well does the school measure up in teaching?

Community of Faith is a private Christian school with a moderate tuition schedule, a 38 year history of academic excellence as evidenced by consistently posted student SAT scores 1.5 to 3 grade levels above the national norm, and students who are well grounded and equipped to address life’s challenges with wisdom and confidence?

Storms of life produce perseverance

Storms of life produce perseverance, character; and character, hope.

Romans 5:3-4 NIV paraphrased

Going through things you never thought you’d go through will only take you places you never thought you’d get to. — Morgan Harper Nichols

Now in our 39th year, we have completed a 38-year history of promoting academic excellence as evidenced by consistently posted student SAT scores 1.5 to 3 grade levels above the national norm by students who are well-grounded and equipped to address life’s challenges with wisdom and confidence.

How to find the right school for your child — "The Tour"

This is part 2, where we talk about “The Tour” of the school’s campus. If you missed the first post in the series, you can read part 1 “The Search” to learn what criteria parents typically use for their search.

Most schools will provide the opportunity to tour the campus, often accompanied by the principal.

The tour will enable you to gain a “feel” for the surroundings or environment in which your child will be taught. If accompanied by the principal or another senior staff member, you will be able to experience how staff personnel relate to parents and other family members.

Whether stated or not, the school relationship with your family should be a partnership. The school becomes an extension of the family, promotes fundamental values for the development of good character, and provides training for the pursuit of academic excellence.

Here are some questions you may want to ask during your school tour. You will probably think of other questions, but this will get you started.

  1. What is the school’s mission statement?

  2. Is student academic achievement a sound reflection of the school’s mission, and if so, how?

  3. What curriculum or curricula is used throughout the school?

  4. Ask to see the scope & sequence for your child’s grade level.

  5. Is instruction based on secular world views or the Christian world view?

  6. Does the school have a Parent-Student Handbook?

  7. How is student success measured?

  8. Does the testing platform conform to local public education standards, or does the testing system measure students on a higher academic & national level such as the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT)?

  9. What is the Student-Teacher Ratio?

Once you find a school that has satisfactorily answered your questions and seems to fit your search criteria, your next step will be to discuss the enrollment process and finances. Visit us at www.cfcsonline.org or call (915) 584-2561 to book a tour of our campus and a meeting with our principal.
